Oh, I'm really sorry, but I need to answer my own question: I was being dumb!
It was the STACK that was causing me problems. I eliminated the legend entry in
the obvious way:
AREA:PowerRange#0000FF11::STACK
Embarrassingly simple. :)

P.S. My next adventure is going to be to get two lines on the same chart, with
unrelated Y axes. That doesn't seem so simple...
