Yes. "aptitude install rssh" installed version 2.3.3-1 on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS. Doing the same on an Ubuntu 12.10 server installed 2.3.3-5. >From your description, the exact problem I saw is fixed in a later version, which is all I hoped to achieve by my post, so all's good. It seems my problem was due to Ubuntu not keeping up with releases of rssh.
