The --suffix-dels option is specific to the backup-dir-dels patch. I can see how you would get the error if the local rsync contains this patch and the remote one doesn't. The patch has a compatibility problem: if you specify a non-default --suffix to the client, it passes both --suffix and --suffix-dels to the server, even though they have the same value. Get a local rsync that doesn't contain the patch and the problem should go away.
