Not in this case: for large file transfer (think about 40+ GB), this would cause excessive load on the receiving side. Anyway, having or not "--inplace" does not shows very different network transfer, at least in these specific tests.
What surprises me is that rsync does not try to concurrently scan both files. Is this the expected behavior?
