Hi All,
Here are a few other differences you might be interested in. I use both rdist and
rsync on a daily basis to update and keep in sync 14 servers across the US.
My servers are used to provide CAE software to each site, but are not
used to run any jobs except small admin jobs, so they don't
have to be big or fast (Sparc 2's) and thus don't have a lot ram (64 mb).
Rdist doesn't take a lot of memory or cpu time, so I can update all 14 machines
simultaneously. If I tried that with rsync, my master server would not work
very well because rsync is memory and cpu intensive.
But I need to use rsync to clean up my servers because rdist cannot handle
hard links, change directories to soft links, or change permissions or ownership.
I have a script that runs rsync to each server, 1 at a time. I have been waiting a
long time for a version of rsync that will use 1 list on the master and update
multiple clients from the one list, but after a couple of years, I guess it's not
going to get done.
