Have you tried building an RPM of rsyslog yourself? I put the method on how I did it in the rsyslog wiki, and I have 3.x built in RPM and running on various SL 4 servers (RHEL 4 derivatives). I haven't tried SL 5 with rsyslog yet, but you should be able to use my spec to build it. If you get it running, we can make it available to the community.
