So, this has two parts: 1) A SELinux problem on RHEL5 and similar (but the logs show nothing!!). It seems the syslog context is not allowed to access FIFOs. I'll have to fix that.
2) Even when there are no permission problems, rsyslog 4.5.5 just doesn't write to a named pipe. From the following consecutive lines: *.* |/var/log/external/fifo *.* /var/log/external/file the file receives data, the FIFO doesn't. I'll paste all this to bugzilla.
