Actually, it looks like it was just an improperly initialized variable, so
that the default for creating directories was most often "on" (as
documented), but could randomly be "off" as well. This bug was hidden all the
way back to v3 (I didn't bother to look at v2...). Simple solution, now
merged into all branches. The patch for is

Or probably better just pull the newest git version.
