Hi all,

I would like to use the opportunity and wish all of you the very best for the
holiday season and the new year!

Rsyslog has seen an area of tremendous growth in 2009. Not only could we add
many enterprise (and other) features, we also saw more and more Linux
distributions switching to rsyslog as the default syslogd. All large
distributions (except Suse) either today use rsyslog or will do so in the
next future! This is very good news.

Also good news is that the community is growing. There are more people than
ever that help others on the mailing list, and some begin to regularly show
up in the support forums on the web. We had some request for help with new
features from "third parties", which will hopefully manifest in some good
announcements in 2010. Also, we saw our first commercial sponsorships, which
was a great relief to me, showing that the enterprise space is also moving
into our directions.

Of course, there is lots left to do. With growing community help, I am very
positive 2010 will be a great year as well. A stats engine plus - finally - a
new config format is on my "schedule" for 2010 and I guess a lot of new
features will also come in. I promise to keep up maintaining and enhancing
the project. Feature-wise, I guess, 2010 will have fewer additions than we
saw in 2009, simply because there are already so many features and getting
them used turns out to be a more important focus than adding "just that extra
bell and whistle". Getting them used means more testing (thanks to all who
reported bugs!), better doc and tutorials and, to re-iterate, a more usable
config syntax. But, as usual, I may end up many more new features than I now
envision ;)

I am sure that 2010 will be as exciting for the rsyslog community as 2009
was. My sincere thanks to everyone who helped make that happen. Writing some
software is one thing - thorough testing, bug reporting, and help to users is
another three ;) The community help is very important to get that part done,
so that I can focus on enhancing and improving the code itself. Once again
for all the help in this regard!

Oh, yes, in case you wonder why I write all this on December, 22nd: I'll be
heading to my holiday vacation tomorrow morning and will probably not be
online until early January. So I need to be a bit early ;)

My warmest regards and thanks,
Rainer
