I was using the latest ubuntu release, that I had backported to lucid (5.8.1)

Now using 5.8.3 and memory use looks a *lot* better. (Sitting around
240M resident)

I'll make a suggestion to the ubuntu maintainer to move up to 5.8.3 :)

for good or bad, rsyslog is a program under very rapid development. this is good since lots of improvements are available, but it's bad when combined with distro packagers who don't keep up.

The version is too old. TLS had a memory leak, which has been fixed in
5.6.4.
Note that 5.6.5 is the current stable, so using 5.6.4 calls for
unneeded
problems, aka upgrade to the latest one ;)
