Aha! Yes, that helps greatly!
I was a bit sceptical about how well it would perform, piping logs to a program 
then to rsyslog but it does seem that lots of people do it that way. It just 
feels a bit clunky.

It's a shame Apache can't have multiple ErrorLog destinations and support the 
built-in syslog functionality in CustomLog
