It is because of not matching. Yes, it will leak.

If I use the second, it doesn't return any results, and it has ever-increasing until it crashes memory usage. Even if I got the actual syntax wrong so it doesn't find any matches, it seems like it shouldn't run out of memory and crash. :) This is on 7.4.5. Thanks!
