If it's helpful to know at all - I've been building our rsyslog packages with a fork of brew2deb - which is a rather odd beast that combines homebrew, and fpm to build packages. In my case, I just build one rsyslog package that contains everything we need since I'm not building it for general consumption. My package formulas are here - https://github.com/taotetek/brew2deb/tree/master/packages
It's probably not the right solution for general use ubuntu packages but just putting it out there in case anyone might find it useful or get ideas from it.
