with impstats (on current versions at least) you will see that the disk queue size is going down, you will also see the action processing more messages than it enqueues

you really need to get off of 5.8, at least for your important systems. That is so old that there are a huge number of bugs that have been fixed, and if you are doing anything non-trivial with it and run into grief, the odds are really good that newer versions are better.

There are repositories that contain newer versions that will run on older versions of RedHat. Even Redhat ships a v7 as an option for their older versions now
