What did happen to the "new documentation format" effort?

I think wiki could be fair enough, but I don't know how it will behave for old-releases. If I'm not wrong, current system allow to have different documentation pages according to each version, so perhaps it worths keep it.
On the other hand, markdown is more friendly than....whatever is that. :P
