We use mod_fcgi but we still do a nightly apache "reload" which just restarts the fcgi server processes.

On occasion, we must reload during the day, but that is perhaps once every 4-5 months.

It just seems to grow and grow the memory used per process.

That sure sounds like a memory leak. If there are certain operations that can make the growth happen faster that would help us track it down.
