That was foremost on the mind of Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville Saturday night when he met the press after Alabama had upset his Tigers, 31-7. "I just hope that happened for a good reason," he said. "It's obvious we didn't play very well." Although Auburn didn't play well in any phase of the game - on offense, defense or in the kicking game - Tuberville said he thought he had a good gameplan. "We knew they had a good football team. We were hoping to get it to the fourth quarter. Obviously, we didn't get it that far. We didn't tackle very well. They had a good game plan." He said the game was "pretty ugly." Tuberville said he'd have to take his hat off to Alabama quarterback Andrew Zow, who has now beaten Auburn twice in Jordan-Hare Stadium. "Coach Fran will have to answer questions about why he hasn't played Zow all year. He looked pretty good. We knew he could throw the football. This was the best I've seen him. We'd have had to play our best to have kept up with him, the way he was playing. "With Zow, they were in the shotgun in almost every play and he kept us off balance." Still, Tuberville said, offensively, what it came down to was that Auburn couldn't block. But he said it had nothing to do with a lack of effort. "I think we played hard. We are 7-3 and still have a chance to win our division two weeks from tonight. But it will take a while to get over this one, because it is our biggest game of the year. "It's frustrating when you don't play well at home and give yourself a chance. Now we have to figure out what happened and get ready for a good LSU team." Tuberville said his team looked tired mentally and physically, but that young teams have to learn to deal with both success and defeat. Alabama rushed for 328 yards, with Santonio Beard and Ahmaad Galloway each gaining more than 100 yards. They had long runs of 54 and 33, respectively. Much of the yardage came on the draw. Tuberville said it was a kind of handoff reverse. Alabama also ran more misdirection and more sprint out passes and flood routes than it has previously. "They have run the draw well all year, but hadn't run it very much. We kept adjusting, with three-, four- and five-man fronts, but kept overrunning the play," the coach said. "That was their option. With Zow in the game, they were not going to run the option, so they put the ball in their running backs' hands a little bit more." He said the draw is a good play and they did a good job executing it. Tuberville said Carnell Williams cracked his left shoulder and, it is hoped, he'll be back for the championship game on Dec. 7. "There is no doubt that we lost something when Carnell came out. He could have given us that extra yard and allowed us to reverse the field. He's a playmaker. Without him, we had to change our gameplan a little, start throwing a little more. But we're not going to point our finger at that," he said. "They just lined up and out-executed us, they played better than we did. We couldn't put anything together, couldn't take the ball down the field. It was one of our worst efforts. "We had some bad plays and didn't offset them with big plays. It just wasn't one of our days." Tuberville said he knew Alabama's Tyler Watts would not be able to play with a groin injury and Auburn had prepared for Zow. But the Tigers couldn't make anything happen. Alabama played differently, defensively, blitzing more and not letting receivers run free in the secondary by playing zone, as they did against LSU and other teams. Tuberville said everyone knows that Auburn has overachieved this year and was favored for some reason. probably because of a better record. But in this game, Alabama made enough plays to win, and not give Auburn a chance.
