Here's Ray's response:

Of all the things people have said about me - and trust me, this weekend
there has been plenty - there is one thing I can honestly say about myself:
I have never tried to stir up controversy for the sake of controversy. I
know that is something a lot of so-called "journalists" do these days, and
it creates a lot of attention for them and possibly career advancement. But
it has never been my intention (which might explain much of my so-called
"career").
That being said, I hope I have never run from a controversy, either.

In Wednesday's paper, I wrote a column that struck a nerve - no, slammed
into several nerves like a Mike Tyson uppercut - with many Tide fans. I
always try to respond to every person who e-mails me, about any column. This
was no different. I estimate that on Saturday alone, I wrote something like
82 e-mails. But I did not get a chance to respond to everyone, so let me
take a few paragraphs here to try to make clear what prompted me to write
what I did last week.

IMO, Melick's timing was terrible on this issue and he should have known
better. I did write to him last Wednesday, he did respond and we exchanged
email a couple of times over the weekend. Ray is a reasonable person, but he
really screwed up on this one.
