The NCAA, not usually known for its mercy, ought to consider cutting
Mississippi State a little slack when it finishes its investigation of the
football program.

Croom will have enough pressure on him without being burdened by the stiff
penalties he could inherit for possible rules violations by Jackie
Sherrill's teams from 1998-2002.

Neither Croom nor anyone else at Mississippi State is pleading for special
favors. But, in judging how hard to come down on the Bulldogs, the NCAA
should consider the consequences.

It's in the interest of the NCAA, whose leadership has voiced support for
greater diversity in coaching, that Croom be given a fair shot at
resurrecting the sorry Bulldogs. They went 2-10 this season and 8-27 over
the past three years. If they were breaking rules, they surely weren't
showing anything for it on the football field. [...]
