Bama hopes to bring Hawaii to Tuscaloosa After consecutive visits to play Warriors, Alabama working on home game against Hawaii for 2006 Friday, July 09, 2004 By THOMAS MURPHY Sports Reporter The bowl-probation relationship the University of Alabama established with the University of Hawaii two summers ago might yield a trip to the mainland for the Rainbow Warriors in 2006. Alabama athletics director Mal Moore and Hawaii AD Herman Frazier are close to completing a deal for the teams to meet in Tuscaloosa early in the 2006 season, the Honolulu Advertiser reported Thursday. Frazier and Moore have held ongoing discussions about scheduling more games between the programs since the Crimson Tide reached an agreement to play in Honolulu in 2002. That game was set up as a reward of sorts for Dennis Franchione's second Tide team after Alabama was hit with a two-year bowl ban in February 2002. The current negotiations could also include one or two more trips to Hawaii for Alabama, which split two games against the Warriors. If the two sides reach agreement on the 2006 game, Hawaii would tentatively be the first visitor in the remodeled Bryant-Denny Stadium. The 2002 Alabama team took advantage of the 13th game on its schedule to notch a 21-16 win and secure its NCAA-best 27th 10-win season. The 4-9 2003 team simply extended its misery with a 37-29 loss. Hawaii coach June Jones said a road game at Alabama would be a "huge opportunity" for his program. He told the Advertiser the guarantee Hawaii would receive would be "close to a million dollars" for a game in 2006.
