MISSISSIPPI STATE: Receiver Antonio Hargro has been suspended indefinitely because of a violation of team rules. In 29 games during his career, Hargro has two starts and nine catches for 115 yards. The preseason depth chart has him listed fifth among five flankers, behind a sophomore and three redshirt freshmen. In the past few months, Coach Sly Croom has also suspended leading rusher Nick Turner, offensive tackle James Redmond and defensive end Roosevelt Tate. State players are getting in shape this summer. Lineman Richard Burch is down from 337 pounds to 298. Offensive lineman Otis Riddley has gone from 369 to 338. He has a target weight of 315 by Aug. 1. Lineman Johnny Wadley has recovered from ankle surgery and has lost from 365 pounds to 330. (BulldogBlitz.com)

ALABAMA: Receiver A. C. Carter, who has not played since Nov. 29, 2001 because of two tibia surgeries, is optimistic that he will be ready for the Sept. 4 home opener against Utah State. The limp that he had during spring practice has disappeared. (TuscaloosaNews.com) Quarterback Spencer Pennington, who played at 235 pounds last year, is down to 215. He has recovered from shoulder surgery. (BamaOnline.com) Alabama officials are close to signing a deal with Hawaii for a home game in 2006. The payout would be the biggest in Hawaii history. ARKANSAS: The Hogs received news this week on several signees. Desmond Williams (6-1, 200), a safety from Euless Trinity in Texas, has qualified, but Freddie Barnett (6-1, 300), a lineman from Texarkana, Ark., came up one-point shy on his qualifying score. He might attend a junior college or Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. Also failing to qualify were linebacker Fred Fairchild from Little Rock Central, quarterback Woody Wilson from Fayetteville and Ryan Young from Waco, Texas. Coach Houston Nutt said the Hogs oversigned during the recruiting period knowing that several signees would not qualify. (Hawgsports.com)

LSU: Melvin Oliver, a defensive end, has been restricted by a restraining order from harassing or abusing his former girlfriend. Oliver is projected to take over for Marquise Hill. The senior played in 13 of LSU’s 14 games last year. Coach Nick Saban said he has not decided how he will discipline Oliver. (theadvocate.com) Since the SEC went to divisional play in 1992; three schools (Alabama in 1992, Florida in 1996 and Tennessee in 1998) have won national championships, but failed to win the SEC or even their division the following year. (Mobile Register) Tiger players and officials have received their national championship rings that cost $260 each. LSU ordered 268 rings and 41 pendants at a cost of $77,388. By comparison, the NFL allowed New England to spend $5,000 for its Super Bowl champs rings. GEORGIA: Sophomore defensive end Ray Gant, who spelled David Pollack last season, has gained 30 pounds since the Capital One Bowl against Purdue and weighs 285 pounds. Sophomore safety Olaolu Sanni-Osomo will not be able to play in 2004 because of knee surgery. He underwent knee surgery six weeks ago to repair a damaged meniscus. The next surgery is scheduled for August 10. (UGASports.com) Ticket demand is at an all-time high at Georgia. Some 9,000-ticket requests were denied.

FLORIDA: Fred Rouse, a receiver from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln High, has cut his list of suitors down to Florida, FSU, Miami, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Texas and Tulane. Howard Lingard has announced that he will attend Itawamba Community College in Mississippi. After he finishes junior college, Lingard will be able to be re-recruited. Hivera Green (6-5, 255), a defensive lineman from Conway, S. C., has 20 offers, but his favorite schools are Michigan, Florida and FSU. He has a 3.3 grade point average. He also wants to attend camps at Florida and FSU. (GatorBait.net)

OLE MISS: Jonathan Garner (6-4, 206), a quarterback from Daytona Beach, Fla., has camped at Miami, Ole Miss and Stanford. He camps at Florida this weekend. Ole Miss coaches told Garner that he was their top quarterback target. (RebelGrove.com)

TENNESSEE: Wes Brown (6-4, 245), a lineman from Athens, Ala., has verbally committed to the Vols. Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Georgia have offered him. (Volquest.com)

SOUTH CAROLINA: Matt Slocum (6-5, 245), a defensive end from West Monroe (La.), has been offered by South Carolina, Tulane and Louisiana-Monroe. He ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and had a 33-inch vertical leap. (GamecockCentral.com)

CLEMSON: The Tigers received a net income of $301,352 from their Peach Bowl appearance last season, the largest net income in five bowl games under Tommy Bowden. The ACC received $1.2 million of the Peach Bowl’s $2.2 million payout. The ACC allowed Clemson to spend $1 million for the bowl, but the school used nearly $698,648 and kept the remainder. GEORGIA TECH: Ray Herring (5-10, 187), a safety from Holy Trinity Academy in Melbourne, Fla., said he wants to visit Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and Tennessee. He has a 3.7 grade point average. (JacketsOnline.com)

FSU: Sophomore defensive end Darrell Burston went from 226 pounds last season to 248 during the offseason. He worked out nearly everyday at the Competitive Edge Sports, near Atlanta, driving an hour and back each day during the summer. His bench press increased from 210 to 275 pounds. Michael Ray Garvin (5-8, 180), a defensive back from Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, has 40 offers including FSU. He also has a 3.0 grade point average. Nearly 90 players are showing up for offseason workouts. Freshmen signees J. R. Bryant, Tony Carter and Xavier Lee took part in workouts for the first time Tuesday. Lee, a heralded quarterback signee, got down on one knee and threw the football 65 yards. A statue of FSU coach Bobby Bowden will be unveiled before the Clemson game Sept. 25. The football field will be named in his honor before the Florida game Nov. 20. Monday begins the first phase of the annual strength and conditioning tests. Offensive lineman Matt Meinrod is hoping to bench press more than 500 pounds during the competition. Last year, tailback Lorenzo Booker was named the pound-for-pound champion of the strength and conditioning tests.

MIAMI: Signee Willie Williams was sentenced to three year’s probation Tuesday for violating probation on a burglary conviction. He could have faced a year in jail. Williams has to perform 250 hours of community service while on probation and is banned from drinking alcohol and unprescribed drugs. Now the school must determine whether or not to admit him.
