Alabama Football Fall Practice Preview
By Mitch Dobbs
Date: Aug 2, 2004

With just over a week remaining until the beginning of fall football practices, the
University of Alabama released its preseason practice schedule on Monday.

Rules allow up to 105 players to report next Monday, although Alabama might hold a
spot for Ezekial Knight, who is awaiting test results to see if he is qualified to
enroll at UA. The 105-man roster is expected to be released this week.

On Monday, Augst 9, the squad will have photo and video mug shots made, be issued
equipment and lockers, and some will be obligated to attend a press gathering at the
football complex later that day. The squad will practice for the first time Tuesday
afternoon, August 10.

Classes for Alabamas second summer session end on August 11th, and final examinations
for the term will wrap up on the 13th of August, an important date for Anthony Bryant,
who must fulfill graduation requirements this summer in order to be eligible for his
final season. And its not unusual for a few players to have academic work that must
be completed.

Another milestone will take place on Saturday, August 14, when coaches get to see
their players in full pads for the first time. The Crimson Tide will begin with
two-a-day practices on the following day, and continue every other day until August
23. In a rule that was in place for the 2003 season, a team may not have consecutive
days of two-a-day practices. Scrimmages dates have not yet been released.

The first day off for the Tide players will be on August 28th, 18 days into fall camp.
On Sunday, August 29th, the squad will begin game week preparation for the season
opener against Utah State, which kicks off at 6 p.m. on September 4, 2004.

After Alabamas opener with Utah State, the Tide players will practice from 8:45-9:30
PM on Sunday. Monday will be the squads off day. Tuesday through Thursday the squad
will practice in the afternoon.

Among players who will not be on the 105-man roster are John Parker Wilson and Drew
Davis, who were "greyshirts" and are expected to re-sign in 2005. Defensive linemen
Lorenzo Washington and Brandon Fanney will attend prep school and are expected to
re-sign next year as well. Nikita Stover, Kevin Hamilton and Jeramie Holifield will go
the junior college route will be re-recruited in two years.
