'Intimidator' sparked his teammates

As the Dallas Cowboys stumbled through the first few seasons of existence, the team lacked someone to set the tone on defense, someone a bit nasty to intimidate opposing offenses.
In the 1963 draft, that intimidator arrived wrapped in a 6-foot-1, 215-pound package, and his personality rubbed off on the defense.
A first-round pick from Alabama, Lee Roy Jordan was the defensive leader the Cowboys craved. Called "the finest player I ever coached" by Bear Bryant, Caller-Times voters concurred, as a reader poll named Jordan the finest middle linebacker in Dallas history.
Most defensive players take pride in their ability to hit. But when Jordan joined the Cowboys, his ability to lay out opponents sparked teammates. [...]
