Ok Tide Fans, if this is Roach or any other member of our football team, should that person be kicked off the team?
I can almost hear the screaming from Alabama fans if this had been a UT or Allbarn player. Bama fans wouldn't rest until the criminal was arrested and permanently barred from the team. Does the same hold true since this 'might' be a Bama player? By Josh Bean and Bernie Delinski NYT Regional Newspapers August 31, 2004 SHEFFIELD | Police remain uncertain how to resolve confusion surrounding a weekend altercation at a local club that involved a man claiming to be an Alabama football player. Sheffield police were called to the Fiesta Club between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on Sunday morning to break up a verbal altercation. "We have a complaint involving an allegation that at the Fiesta Club, the individual was placed under arrest, but just before that he stated he was a University of Alabama football player, and he broke and ran," Sheffield Police Chief Doug Aycock said. Initial media and Internet reports Monday linked Tide linebacker Freddie Roach to the incident, but sources within the UA program said Roach has told the coaching staff that he was in Tuscaloosa when the Sheffield altercation occurred. Aycock said the arresting officer identified Roach based on information in Alabama's football media guide and information from another person. Roach, a former star at Brooks High School, has started two seasons as middle linebacker for the Tide. Alabama players and coaches had a day off Monday, and Roach was unavailable for comment, said Tide athletic spokesman Larry White. Efforts to reach Roach failed and UA officials said they would have no comment without further information. Coach Mike Shula will likely address the issue today at his weekly news conference. Aycock said there's a possibility that the department will issue misdemeanor warrants today on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Both charges would stem from the Sunday morning incident. "We have not signed any warrants," he said Monday night. "We're still investigating." Aycock said the accused person displayed a firearm in his waistband, prompting the arresting officer to grab his arm. The gun then fell to the ground, and the accused person fled the scene on foot. The officer did not give chase, and Aycock declined to identify the officer. A Florence woman later reported the gun stolen at the club. Aycock said no weapons charges are expected to be filed in relation to the incident. Police are investigating whether the accused person is Roach or another man, who also could be an Alabama football player, masquerading as Roach. "The person stated he was a football player, and we have reason to believe now that he was a player," Aycock said. When asked if Roach was involved, Aycock said, "We're not through with our investigation. When we are, we'll release the name." ______________________________________________________ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!
