The paper this morning said Gullion has two bulging discs in his back:

"TUSCALOOSA - Alabama backup quarterback Marc Guillon said he was diagnosed
Tuesday with two bulging discs and a torn muscle in his lower back and that
he is in a lot of pain every time he throws a pass.

And if he was needed to replace starter Spencer Pennington, Guillon said
that the offense would be "limited" with him at quarterback.

"When I throw, it feels like somebody has a knife stabbing me in the back,"
Guillon said following practice Tuesday.

Guillon had a MRI on his back Monday and said doctors prescribed rest as the
best way to treat the injury. But that isn't convenient with four games and
a possible bowl still left to play.

"We would probably be pretty limited in what we could do - real short passes
and just handing the ball off," Guillon said if he had to go into the game.

"I could go in but I definitely wouldn't be Dan Marino, tearing it up."

Guillon said the back began bothering him when he got increased practice
time in the days leading up to his first start against Arkansas on Sept. 25.
He estimated that he was only at about "80 or 85 percent" in his starts
against the Razorbacks and South Carolina.

"I couldn't go out there and get the job done with the back that I had," he
said.

Tide to hire associate AD: Alabama is expected to hire a new associate
athletic director today and strong indications are that Troy AD Johnny
Williams will be named to the post.

The new position, created by athletic director Mal Moore, would oversee the
Tide Pride ticket program, the ticket office, marketing and the media
relations department.

A primary responsibility for the new hire will be the selling of the new sky
boxes in the expanded north end zone at the expanded Bryant-Denny Stadium,
which will begin in December.

Sources have also said that the hiring of the new associate AD is not a
first step in seeking a replacement for the 64-year-old Moore when he
retires.

Injury report: Alabama is looking to get a key defensive player back this
week while Tennessee seems likely to lose two key defenders.

Tide outside linebacker Juwan Garth - who has missed the last two games -
practiced Tuesday and coach Mike Shula said, "We anticipate him playing this
week unless something changes."

"I'm definitely playing this week," Garth said after practice.

Tide reserve defensive tackle Justin Britt (ankle) was in an orange jersey
for injured players and Shula said he was questionable to play.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has suspended safety Brandon Johnson, who leads the
Vols with two interceptions, after his arrest Monday on a felony firearm
charge.

And defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona, who has started all six games and is
tied for the team lead with three sacks, is listed as doubtful for the game
with a knee injury.

Shula said on Finebaum yesterday that Gullion is still having some trouble
with his back but if needed he could play. Shula said Gullion could have
played last week if needed too but they didn't need him, mainly because the
running game was so successful. Shula said their goal was to have a
balanced attack but I think it is obvious they are going to run the ball
first and only pass if necessary.
