USM's Nix takes job at South Carolina
Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix is leaving the Golden Eagles' coaching staff to take a similar job at South Carolina.
South Carolina's new coach, Steve Spurrier, announced the move in a press release Monday afternoon.
Nix, 32, became the Golden Eagles' defensive coordinator in 2001, succeeding Dave Wommack when Wommack left for Arkansas.
Nix and former Southern Miss defensive coordinator John Thompson will share defensive coordinator duties at South Carolina. Thompson was fired last month as the head coach at East Carolina.
Nix's USM defense ranked in the Top 15 nationally for three consecutive seasons (2001-03) in scoring defense. He was a linebacker for the Golden Eagles from 1990-93.
Nix's younger brother, Derrick, is the USM tight ends coach.
