UT hire sure to raise Tide's ire Kramer's daughter new assistant tickets director By CHRIS LOW Staff Writer KNOXVILLE The Alabama conspiracy theorists will have a field day with the University of Tennessee's latest hire in the athletics department. Sara Gray Kramer, the daughter of former SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer, started work this week as UT's assistant director of tickets. She was previously at Central Michigan as the assistant director of athletic development in charge of the Chippewa Club. Attorneys representing former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams have charged that Roy Kramer was part of a conspiracy along with Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer and the NCAA in helping to land the Crimson Tide on probation. A Tuscaloosa judge threw out most of the case last week, dismissing claims of conspiracy and negligence, as well as Cottrell's claims against the NCAA. What was left of the case was scheduled to go to trial yesterday, but was delayed by Hurricane Dennis weather concerns. "I'm not into conspiracies. I'm into hiring the best people," said Tennessee Athletics Director Mike Hamilton, adding that Gray Kramer was hired a few weeks ago. Hamilton said John Currie, UT's associate athletics director for external operations, made the decision to hire Gray Kramer based purely on her qualifications. Hamilton noted she had applied for several other jobs at UT in the past. Several others were in the running for the job, including Danny Burnley, who has worked in the UT ticket department for more than 20 years. Gray Kramer will work under Chris Besanceney, who came to UT last year as assistant athletics director for tickets. Gray Kramer was Central Michigan's athletics ticket manager for three years before being promoted to assistant director of athletic development in 2002. After stepping down as SEC commissioner, Roy Kramer retired to Rarity Bay, a golf resort just south of Knoxville. He's originally from Maryville, Tenn.
