Dear all, As a follow-up to the RTG WG interim meeting in June 2022 (see https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/interim-2022-rtgwg-01/session/rtgwg), we (that is mainly Jon Crowcroft and myself with the kind input from a number of people you will find in the ACK section of the current resulting write-up) have put together a discussion paper on multicast (addressing and delivery), available at https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.09029.pdf.
Following the question Lixia asked in the interim, namely 'What are the things that are identified by the identifiers?', we titled this write-up as 'If Multicast is the Answer, What was the Question?', leading us to re-visit some of the historical beginnings of IP multicast, its problems, and the more contemporary realizations through various forms of information-centric networking to newer forms like BIER and MSR6. The intention here is to not just to renew interest in multicast (see some of the possible drivers in the write-up for doing so) but also relate this to the wider discussion on addressing and delivery mechanisms that we see in other parts of the IETF (e.g., in the Int area work on 'Internet Addressing' - see https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-iannone-internet-addressing-considerations/00/ as well as the contemporary works mentioned in the write-up), all while trying to establish a common architectural lens on those solutions . If you find this discussion of interest, please feel free to comment, either to this list (possibly including any other list that may be of interest) or directly to the authors, if you prefer. Best, Dirk
