In a mass move ment for a corruption-free country, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement will organise a massive walkathon to popularise the Right to Information Act on September 4.
The walkathon will start from Saragur in Heggadadevanakote taluk and culminate near the Mahatma Gandhi Statue on MG Road in Bengaluru. Students, activists and villagers will participate in the event. "We want to ensure that RTI becomes an important tool even in the rural areas so that the villagers can fight against corruption with the help of this. The National Rural Employment Scheme has theoretically came into effect from April 1, but the villagers are yet to benefit from it," said Dr R. Balasubramaniam, president, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, at a press conference here on Friday. The walkathon will end on October 2, and will cover around 100 villages in Mysore, Chamarajnagar, Mandya, Ramnagar and Bengaluru districts. The 30-day padayatra hopes to make a difference to the lives of about 2 lakh people. About 50 people will walk in the padayatra from the beginning to the end and there will be many others who will join them in different stretches of the journey. "About 15 youth from 15 different districts of Karnataka will be joining us on their bicycles in the padayatra. They will be conducting road shows on the way and when they go back to their districts, they will organise small padayatras there which will increase awareness about RTI," added Mr Balasubramaniam. Some college students from Bengaluru will also participate in the event for a period of 10 days.
