Dear Sir,

At the outset, I convey my sincere thanks for furnishing the requested RTI
information through National Crime Records Bureau, New Delhi.

Abstract is as under:

Scenario on Jail inmates in the country as on end 2005 is as under:

   - *109 Central Jails* having capacity to accommodate *111917* inmates
   houses *160991* inmates with *occupancy rate of **143.80** %*.

   - *284 District Jails* having capacity to accommodate *85831* inmates
   houses *137732* inmates with *occupancy rate of 160.50 %*.

   - *849 Sub-Jails* having capacity to accommodate *35140*  inmates houses
   *48543* inmates with *occupancy rate of* *138.10 %*.


   - *14 Women Jails* having capacity to accommodate *2243* inmates houses *
   2961* inmates with *occupancy rate of 132.00 %*.


   - *12 BORSTAL Schools* *** having capacity to accommodate 2466 inmates
   houses 1106 inmates with *occupancy rate of 44.80 %*.


   - *27 Open Jails* having capacity to accommodate 3281 inmates houses 2195
   inmates with *occupancy rate of 66.90 %*.


   - *26 Special Jails* having capacity to accommodate 4247 inmates houses
   4171  inmates with *occupancy rate of 98.20 %*.


   - *7 Other Jails* having capacity to accommodate 1372 inmates houses 669
   inmates with *occupancy rate of 48.80 %*.


   - *Total 1328 Jails* having capacity to accommodate 246497 inmates 358368
   houses  inmates with *occupancy rate of 145.40 %**.*

The above information is as on end 2005. Data compilation for the year 2006
has commenced and data collection for the year 2007 is yet to start.

Considering the avenues for expeditious collection / compilation of such
data using means of IT, the same may be updated atleast on a month-to-month
basis hereafter for its meaningful purpose.

Further, considering the overcrowding in 2005, that might have possibly
further worsened by now, there is an urgent need to expand the jail
capacities / plan new Central / District jails, on priority, particularly in
the States of *Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and
Uttar Pradesh*.

GOI may like to look into on priority.
