Officials say no to RTI amendment

KOLKATA, 29 OCT: Members of a city-based NGO Calcutta Samaritans today urged
the Union government officials not to amend the Right to Information Act (RTI).
They were speaking at a programme, organised jointly with the West Bengal RTI
Manch at Press Club this evening.
Mr Moloy Bhattacharya a member of the organisation alleged that the Union
government had planned to amend the Act, but any kind of amendment to the Act
was not necessary. It had been decided that “frivolous and vexatious
applications” should be exempted from the purview of RTI Act . He alleged that
if the amendment was made, officials would use it as a tool to cloud
information.
While sharing his experience, Mr Bhattacharya said that they several cases were
reported from the districts where people living below the poverty line were
being debarred from their basic rights.
They were not aware of the existence of such an Act and as a result they are
exploited by most of the panchayat members. They believe that there is a need
to take up awareness campaigns in all the districts about the importance of
this Act.
They have written a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh urging him to
look into the matter. ;SNS
