Actually, 802.4 did not use "ethernet" at all; it was a carrierband network
on coaxial cable with a token passing LLC. There was never any CSMA involved
at all, nor was there a standard "ethernet" MAC layer, such as thinnet
or 10-base-T.

As an aside, I used to work for a company that foolishly let GM lead them
down the garden path of 802.4, only to get burned when the Saturn Plant
went on line with.....you guessed it......ethernet. (My former company
is now no more than a trademark owned by a large German Conglomerate.)
