Yes, I think we all have done this. This is how most install
procedures work. You boot off the floppy and it uncompress a
root file system image into a RAM disk. There is a Linux
distribution that works this way too. I have used it to run
Linux on a borrowed machine where I could not mess up the existing
Windoze setup. There are likely others but I like "tomsrtbt".
It comes with a build script that will copy your running kernel
onto the floppy and is easy to customize.
