Why don't you try replacing the driver in the patched rtl distribution with
the driver that comes with RedHat? The easiest method is to make the ethernet
drivers modules in your kernel config and then see if insmoding the other
driver helps.

The other thing to do is to compare /proc/interrupts under the rh and rtl
distributions.
