Compressing the file system to fit into flash is O.K. if your design will 
be static. Mine will change and change often due to the configuration ... I 
am planning to use a DOC or SanDisk to keep the OS and required files. Run 
the /var and other temporary directories on ramdisk. This way I can change 
the OS and rtl and configuration when needed without much effort (over 
ethernet from my desk). I also have the ability to change revision numbers 
... So depending on the volume you plan to do the extra cost of more FLASH 
is O.K. (SanDisk 60 MB ~ $290).
