You used to be able to pass strings and I used to  have trouble with ints, too.
I tried using just ints and the same result ... even the example in the
"Linux Kernel Internals" book by Beck et al (ISBN 0-201-33143-8) fails
with the same kind of error and that example passes both ints and strings.

Still looking for a solution.
