hi,
i've had a similar problem with the D patch. i finally got patch
F, (which was in beta.tgz on the ftp), to work after turning down the
compiler optimizations, though it's not been completely stable.
alternately, if you don't need a 2.2 kernel, i've had a much easier time
with the patches based on the 2.0 kernels.
more generally, when my user code has something like while (1) {},
the system hangs ( hitting the alt+sysreq+p key reports an address in the
user code on repeated hangs). putting while (1) { usleep(1000); } seems
to fix it.
anyone have any ideas about that?

                                rob
