I have this problem as well, probably not printk()-related.
My disk activity spikes as soon as I install the rtl "base" modules (sched,
fifo, ipc). I haven't tracked down which specifically, though.
I also get busy errors on the HD occasionally (a couple a
day) in the log. My drive won't do DMA, though (!!).
