So I now understand the major number issue, and in fact understood
it before, but was lead astray by semi-faulty information on the mknod
man page. The page gives explicit and incorrect directions.
Apparently, RTL fifos are character special files, not FIFOs.
Anyone who doesn't think that's confusing, you've been doing this too
long:) Thanks to those of you who helped....
