I didn't have a lilo.conf error.
I never could find the actual cause, and my compressed kernels were
pretty
small (<470K).
I'm using bzimages now, as a rule, but I don't know if that really
helps.

I had success by just throwing out the .config I was using and starting
over with a minimal config.  Sounds strange, but that config was the
problem, and it was NOT bloated.
I may have found a kernel 2.2.12 make bug but I don't really have time
to
find out.
