Hello everybody. I was absent from the net for a few day. When I came back I realized, that I've never posted any explanation for my disturbing letter. The point is as following: RTlinux (and other RT systems) are more or less accomplished products for their prime target: to allow setting up some linux box as a process controller. But mine primary concern is that of education. This times I work for the Control Systems division of IIT. Our faculty is one of the largest faculties in the world (as far as I know) with nearly 1500 ug. students and estimate of 2000 within 4 years. Thus, we were forced to promote a purely theoretical projects among students, to ease a pressure on our laboratories. This obviously caused many negative effects, the most important of them is the lack of student/hardware interaction in time of studies. Currently, we are able to support only limited number of full-scale hardware oriented projects within limited time-frames, and the only way out of this situation is to reduce a prototyping time. We carried out experiments with the Matlab compiler (it allows automatic generation of RT code for various targets from Simulink model) and it seems that it will be unable to provide all the advanced features we need (such as fuzzy controlled models, etc.). Mine "whole point" letter lists the features one need to allow direct control of plant from high level program. I, certainly, aware of many control programs that are able to provide direct hardware control and high level design tools. But the prolonged learning times are prohibitive to us. C language frameworks are prohibitive also, because students often lack the sufficient knowledge of this language and of programming environment to be able to design a complex controller within a tight time-frame. Of course, this issue can be accorded as not important by Linux community. Nevertheless, we must not forget that there are companies (and Microsoft among them) that are interested in massive investment in education, to allow ultimate acceptance of WinCE.
