I'd hate for this to go into a patent war.  (The patent may not apply
to whatever Cygnus is doing, anyway...)  In the past, open source
efforts have evolved based on the merits of the various competing
proposals, and the amount of good work done on each.  That's the right 
way for these things to be done.
