In short: RTLinux provides Linux and it offers hard realtime.
ECos is not Linux and it offers "soft" realtime.
Ecos is a more traditional "embedded" OS. It is optimized for small
footprint and is a good choice when you are below 4M of memory if you need
an OS at all.
RTLinux is better when you want to use Linux features and you need precise timing.
