Just install the original Linux-Kernel and apply the patch.
I work with SuSE-Linux since more than a year and have not had any
SuSE-specific problems yet.

I tried, but the patch did not succeed. Since the SuSE-Kernels are not that
different from standard kernels, it should be no problem to apply the patches
to the SuSE-Kernels, I think, but you will have to do it manually.
But since I did not need any of the SuSE-specific extensions, I did not try and
used the standard kernel instead.

You may. Just understand, that SuSE, Redhad, Debian,... are distributions
of the very same LinuX. They just added some different bells and whistles,
which are comfortable but not that necessary.
