I can't answer any of your questions, but i will relate my experience as
it may have a bearing on your problem.
I had a similar problem under RTLinux because i was sampling too fast
for my data acquisition hardware. It would work for a while and then
just lock up. If you are not sampling fast, you may want to consider
the timing of your code. A lot of the code i have seen looks like it
could have timing problems with the data acquisition boards that i have
experience with.
