a and b are almost equivalent -if there are conflicts (probably not, or only
trivial ones) they will show in both methods. I would apply the bigger
(raiserfs) patch first.

I would not try to use  Mandrake's kernel - for sure there are much more
patches.

Just get kernel .src.rpm (!not kernel-source.rpm). install it and you should
see in /usr/src/redhat (or similar) both the original kernel and all the
patches.
