are you using kgcc ?
RH 7.1 has an inoficial gcc-2.96 and the official
gcc as kgcc (gcc 2.95.2 (or 3?)). The kernel will
only compile with kgcc .

you should see the same errors if you try to compiled the unpatched 2.4.X kernel
with the compiler - if you don't get these errors for the unpatched kernel 
(as you get it from kernel.org - not the RH kernel !) let me know pleas.
