One simple filter I remember from the VxWorks mail list is to require a standard word in the subject and/or message body. For the VxWorks list, they required "VxWorks" or "Tornado" in the message. Any message not containing one of these words is just dropped. This cuts almost all spam since spammers generally do not bother to check for list requirements, or even if the list accepted their message. I would suggest either "rtl" or "rtlinux" as a mandatory word for all mail messages. It's simple; it's likely to be in the message anyway; and it will be in any reply to a legitimate mail message.
