Hi Stelian! 

It was after referring to your thread that I downgraded to gdb-4.18
(incidentally, I also forced a list command before the dbg command in
gdb and it eliminates the warnings all right). 

The problem is that not all the symbols are being read in, unless they
have all been declared static ... and this is in both versions of gdb; I
have tried reinstallation of everything starting from the concerned rpms
to the RTL kernel, but nothing seems to work.
