Did you "make install" your rtlinux compiled release?
This creates some softlinks under directory "/lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc".
(btw: uname -r is to know your kernel version).

You also need to add your new compiled kernel with the RTLinux patch in your
GRUB or LILO configuration so that you boot onto it.
